LMD 50 unveiled Lanka IOC, SLT and JKH take top billing:

Media Services, the publisher of LMD business magazine, unveiled the 'who's who' of corporate Sri Lanka in its annual edition. The LMD 50.

It announced yesterday that the special edition has been released to bookstores and newsstands.

And for the third time since The LMD 50 was launched 17 years ago, a foreign corporation heads the premier rankings of listed companies in Sri Lanka.

Lanka Indian Oil Corporation, or Lanka IOC, tops the list for the third year in a row which ranks the nation's quoted companies primarily on the basis of turnover.

Lanka IOC is followed by Sri Lanka Telecom in second place and John Keells Holdings at third place.

The Leaderboard, or the 'Top 10', this year also comprises three highly regarded banks - Commercial Bank and Hatton National Bank are in fourth and fifth place respectively, whilst Sampath Bank takes the No. 10 position.

The rest of the field, as far as the top 10 goes, is made up of Ceylon Theatres (in sixth place) and its subsidiary Cargills (at nine), followed by Hayleys and Dialog Axiata.

The LMD 50 says: "The economic Armageddon is a thing of the past. Likewise, the war against terrorism (in this country, at least) is now a matter for the history books. Times when bottom lines were more in the red than in the black have also gone by, with only an exception or two in financial year 2009/10."

"The stage has been set for growth and profitability: inflation is no longer galloping out of control, interest rates have been brought down to earth, the rupee has been rock solid, there is political stability and even the security checkpoints are being dismantled," it adds. An annual compilation along the lines of the Fortune 500, The LMD 50 is published by Media Services, which also produces LMD, Living, Living Colombo Guide, Brands Annual and Most Respected, and presents BENCHMARK, the weekly TV business program.
